Christ has promised that he will build his church, even in this present evil age, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). The church is not ill-equipped for the battle. She has a Chief Shepherd who loves her so much that he gave his life for her, and he continues to intercede and fight for her to the very end. God’s victory comes through seemingly mundane tools, but his means of grace are more than effective. Christ has given us his powerful Word, the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, and the instrument of prayer by which mountains may be moved. He has provided undershepherds to lead his people (Eph 4:11) so that they might grow in grace and sing his eternal praises. The church of Jesus Christ is often beleaguered and suffused with trials, but she will stand in victory—until he comes again.
